Metric and Zoé members collaborate for a good cause

While touring North America together in 2019, Metric and Zoé became close friends. From the chemistry between Canadians and Mexicans METRIC x CDMX (Sergio Acosta, Rodrigo Guardiola, Sánchez Dub and Capri) was born. Their first single is “Common Lives”.

While METRIC was in Mexico City playing two sold-out nights with Zoé at Auditorio Nacional, they somehow found time to write and record a track together at Zoé’s Panoram studio. In the weeks that followed, Jimmy Shaw continued to work on editing the song at METRIC’s studio, Giant, in Toronto, where vocals were also recorded by Emily Haines. From Canada to Mexico, the collaboration continued.

Lyrically, the song addresses the fact that despite political rhetoric to the contrary, as citizens of different countries we share a sense of solidarity and community that has nothing to do with borders.

In participation with global climate initiatives taking place in September around the United Nations Climate Action Summit, METRIC x CMDX are donating the proceeds of “Common Lives” to the Monarch Ultra.

The Monarch Ultra is a 2671 mile ultra marathon that follows the path of migrating monarch butterflies all the way from Canada through the USA to Mexico. The marathon began Sept 19 in Canada and ends Nov 4 in the Sierra Madre mountains in Mexico. The Monarch Ultra is the first attempt to run across Canada, the USA & Mexico in order to raise awareness of pollinating monarch butterflies who make this epic migratory journey every year, and whose populations are in decline. Runners will traverse wild landscapes as well as populated urban areas while building camaraderie, overcoming adversity, and raising funds for the non-profit conservation organization Monarch City USA.

Most importantly, the Monarch Ultra is an opportunity for this team of film-makers, runners, and pollinator advocates to connect communities across North America with common goals of Earth stewardship and biodiversity conservation. We hope that the song “Common Lives” will inspire more runners in Mexico to join the Monarch Ultra and to consider the impact of climate change on declining pollinator populations.
